Education / Experience

Harvey started his lifetime love of playing music at the age of 5 with piano lessons - they didn’t last very long. At age 10 he joined the elementary school band studying the trumpet - that didn’t last too long either. Next was the clarinet and he made it to the end of the school year. When it was time for 5th grade, it was time to try the drums.

Saint Philip & James Elementary School
Harvey played drums from 5th grade through 8th grade at Saint Philip & Saint James Elementary School in Phillipsburg, NJ. He took group lessons in school from the band director, Roger Jinks. He also started taking private lessons from Roger sometime during elementary school and continued the lessons through high school.

Phillipsburg Catholic High School
Harvey attended and graduated from Phillipsburg Catholic High School and was involved in almost every aspect of music available at the school. Harvey played in the concert band, jazz band and the orchestra for the school musical all four years. Harvey also played in the All County Band several years - this was a group made up of key players from all the high schools in Warren County and a concert was performed once a year. He also took private drum lessons with Roger Jinks during most of his high school years.

Honors: Harvey received the John Phillip Sousa award his senior year. This award is presented to one band member each year for outstanding accomplishments in the music department. He was also included in the "Who’s Who in Music" for high schools in his Junior and Senior years.

Trenton State College
Harvey earned his BA in Music Performance, with a minor in computer science, from Trenton State College in 1987. As a percussion major, he studied with Tony DeNicola, a fabulous jazz drummer from the Trenton, NJ, area. In his junior year he performed a "Junior Recital" consisting of approximately 20 minutes worth of music. In October 1987 he performed a "Senior Honors Recital" consisting of an hour of music. With the assistance of fellow percussion students, a TSC alumnus, a local organist and a professional piano accompanist, all the years of practice and studying came to a wonderful high point of his college experience.
