Bucket Drumming

Harvey Minchin has numerous original compositions for buckets.

The "7 Bucket Series" contains many percussion pieces written for various groups playing a variety of plastic buckets.

Any type of buckets may be used and should be selected to achieve an appropriate difference in pitches. The buckets can range in size from small sand buckets to mid-size mop buckets to 5-gallon buckets and the bass parts can be played on large storage buckets or trash cans. Buckets can be mounted on drum or cymbal stands with rope, tape or holes can be drilled in the buckets for mounting.

If 7 different size buckets are not available, using similar buckets can work by altering the pitch. This can be done by cutting buckets to various depths or by adding cardboard circles inside the buckets at various depths. The shorter the bucket, the higher the pitch - or the closer to the head the cardboard is placed, the higher the pitch.

Bucket solos range in difficulty and can be played by a single performer or by a group.

Bucket duets are written for one mid-sized bucket, such as a 5 gallon bucket, and a bass bucket with the performer playing on a large plastic tub or garbage can. These duet be played by a single performer on each part or by a group playing each part.

All the pieces in the series can also be performed on drums using small concert toms (or bongos-care should be taken not to break the heads) for the high parts, toms for the medium and low parts and a bass drum for the bass part. The series contains pieces ranging in difficulty from beginner to advanced and can be performed by a percussion ensemble or as a drum feature at any school concert.

Parts can be played by one player on each part or multiple players on each. The pieces also work great for group lessons.
